What to pack for a Gold Coast getaway
Ever since Kate Bosworth nailed surf-girl-chic in Blue Crush, the bar has been set unobtainabley high for women in the beach fashion stakes. It’s all about rocking a girl-next-door with soft tumbling tresses look by day before making a transformation of Anne Hathaway proportions by night.
As a serial suitcase stuffer, I’ve had to hone my packing craft and stick to the essentials for a weekend getaway. Here’s my rundown on what to pack for your Gold Coast getaway.
Jeans might be a winter staple down south, but in Queensland it’s not uncommon for August to throw a 26-degree sunny, humid curve ball, so pack something shorter to expose a sun-tanned knee on Surfers Paradise Beach. Load up on denim shorts, silk skirts and femme dresses to bring that spring/summer vibe to the coast.
Chunky knit sweaters will give a nod to winter without losing your summer mojo – not to mention being a super cute option to layer over a sundress at cocktail hour. Add a pair of pumps and you’ll be ready to hit Fixx at QT faster than you can say “I’ll have a margarita”.
When it comes to tootsies – consider comfort to explore the coast. By day it’s all about flatforms to give a burst of height without sacrificing any of the comfort. Adorable leopard print slides will give your trotters the je ne sais quoi required to do the morning coffee run and mingle with the Coasty crowd.
Don’t forget cute Converse to take you from beach to bush in your spare time (did you know Mt Tamborine is only 45-minutes’ drive away?). Add a heel, just for good measure – it is the Goldie after all!
Work a tan, safely
If you haven’t heard of slip, slop, slap – you didn’t grow up under the Australian sun. Take it from me, you can get sunburnt even in winter, so pack sunglasses and suncream for this #PBEvent adventure. When it comes to sunnies, bigger is always better. Am I right, Jackie O?
If a dose of vitamin D doesn’t get your motor running, Cavill Avenue has plenty of shade to escape the heat so you can swap the sun for shops. Alternatively, go for gold at SpaQ with their signature Pure Gold treatment (aka 180 minutes of pure bliss) – a warm oil massage, concept facial, lash tint, mani and pedi. There’s more ways than one to get that illusive healthy glow.
It may be wishful thinking to hope for enough downtime to get through a book at this year’s conference but I’m still packing a classic novel. Whether it’s to open during a sunbaking session, or accompany a healthy breakfast at Bumbles there’s always time to sneak in a few pages over a cappuccino. Even if nothing else, a small paperback can always double as an impromptu sun visor – a useful accessory in any girl’s beach bag.
When it comes to bikinis, double the trouble with a plain black set and a printed set – so you end up with more outfit possibilities than a pick ‘n’ mix bag from the local lolly store. The ocean should be a fairly stable 20 degrees this August, which doesn’t rule swimming out of the question (at least for the eskimos among us). Get your beach vibe right by adding a few coloured kaftans and you’ll be looking very St Tropez in Surfers Paradise.
