If Kelly Theobold’s Instagram snaps had you yearning for wide-open spaces and red dust in your boots, then prepare to be wowed even further. The good news is it’s only 1,585 kilometres to Birdsville from Brisbane!
- To drive to Birdsville is to follow in the footsteps of pioneers. There are so many unique and interesting places to pass through on the way that it’s not surprising that a trip to Birdsville is on almost every Australian’s bucket list!
- There’s really nothing better than an outback road trip. We pump the music, wind the windows down and feel the wind in our hair as we pass through some of the most colourful landscape I’ve ever seen. There’s something about cruising through untouched land to an uninterrupted horizon that makes your problems seem insignificant.
- This is Birdsville. It may be a tiny town nestled on the edge of a desert, but with a dynamic community, modern facilities and a rich culture, it’s a great place to live.
- I borrowed a friend’s camel for this shot. Blackjack (on the left!) and his fellow camels walk past the Birdsville Hotel every day on their way home from grazing on the other side of town. Their owners, Rob and Bernadette, are lovely, interesting people who have trekked all over Australia with their camels and blew into Birdsville in September.
- The Birdsville Bakery has the best pies in the world! I recommend the ‘Curried Camel’ or ‘Kangaroo Claret’.
- Possibly one of the most recognised buildings in Queensland.
- Because there’s no high school anywhere near Birdsville, most students go to boarding school. When they come home for holidays, the town comes alive and it’s great to see the kids enjoying their summer in the way that country kids can.
- The walls of the Birdsville Hotel are plastered with history. It takes a special person to live in such an isolated town and these are faces of those that have.
- You can never take enough shots of Big Red! It changes with the wind and sun and although it’s always beautiful, it’s never the same.
- The Simpson Desert is the largest area of parallel sand dunes in the world and permeates three states. It’s a mecca for adventurous travellers in 4WDs and is home to some unique wildlife and indigenous heritage sites. A trip to Poeppels Corner, the junction of the Queensland, South Australia and Northern Territory borders, is a great overnight side trip from Birdsville.

- While Outback Queensland is an amazing place to live and visit, farmers are currently facing the worst drought in years. Spare a thought for those who produce your food as they struggle through a very tough time.
- Unparalleled wide-open spaces and big sky make the outback an incredible destination.
- After a long day, nothing beats enjoying the peace and quiet of Pelican Point, a beautiful peninsula in the Birdsville billabong.
